San Cristobal de las Casas

Our Route So FarAs many of you may have heard, a plane crashed in Mexico City while we were in the next big town north of Mex City called Queretaro. We drove through the city that night late and could smell the smoke and stuff but never saw the crash site. How crazy!

I am soooo tired right now so we are staying a while now in San Cristobal de las Casas which is almost at the Guatemalan border. It’s a mountain town wwaaaayyyy up high above the clouds.

We are making good time and have only been stopped by the police 2 times in the same town – once coming in and once going out and both withing 30 mins. Of each other.  Both times, no problems. A cop asked me if I had cocaine because he saw white powder in my truck bed. It was from cutting tile on my tile saw. I told him to go ahead and try to sniff it if he wanted to but I don’t recommend it. He just laughed and told me to go on. J

I love driving here. It’s like a video game. At one point I passed a car going up a mountain on a blind curve doing 70MPH when a car was passing in the other lane doing the same speed going down hill. 4 cars wide on a 2 lane mountain road. This is very common here. I fit right in. Brian commented “You like driving here don’t you?” YES! I asked if it made him nervous – he said at first, yes, but now that he has seen me do it for 10 hours every day, tired or not, he doesn’t worry at all and just looks out the window. Haha. It’s amazing how GREAT of drivers they are here – very considerate of oncoming traffic really. No kidding. The way they use their turn signals to signal cars behind them to pass and when not to pass is awesome. Mexico could really teach the soccer moms of the USA how to drive. Guatemala however is not so developed on the roads though…

Pray for me – I noticed when I get really tired it is easy for me to be discouraged or a little depressed. That would be the best prayer to always pray for me – just encouragement and rest. Everything else is easy if I have a little of both of those. I really love being here and haven’t even made it yet to my host country. Can’t wait to un pack my car and not have to worry about my stuff anymore.

Tonight at the hotel I am staying in, the told me they had wireless internet. I asked what the code was to get online. So they told me 8888888888 which sounds like a correct code. Well I try on my laptop and my ipod for 20 minutes and tell the guy I don’t think it is working. He looks at me and says, yeah, it’s not working right now. So what do you think I told him? “SO WHY ON EARTH did you NOT tell me that when I FIRST asked you about it?” …no answer – just a shrug.

Haha… patience.

Hey BJ,

Hopefully, by the time this reaches you, you will have made it to Guatemala. You're doing great, just don't hit the policeman and you'll do fine. : ) We're praying for you.
