First Week In Guat City

Wow, today it really got cold. When I say “really cold”, I mean in the 50’s. Not bad for a Country located between the Pacific and the Caribbean in the Tropic of Cancer. Granted, Guatemala City sits at a mile high like Denver, but just a few thousand miles more to the south.

Today is Sunday, and I attended Calvary Chapel, Guatemala City. I felt this should be my first stop since I really enjoy my church back home (Calvary Chapel, Castle Rock, CO). When I arrived I introduced myself to the pastor, and told him about my ties to the church in CO. As services began I looked around and noticed that there were only about 15 of us there total. In the service he mentioned “in passing” how about 29 people were sick today (Bird flu? Plague?). This was probably for my benefit, as was the English rendition of “Open the eyes of my heart Lord”.

The sermon wasn’t bad, and the theology was good, but I still want to check out some other churches before I call one home – preferably one with a few more people. I had researched some reformed congregations (read Presbyterian) here online and will probably check those out in the following weeks. Nevertheless, Sundays in Guat city sure are quiet! Catholic? Evangelical? I would have thought irreligious by the looks and sounds of the empty streets this morning…

This completes my first full week in Guatemala. Gradually acclimating, always learning. This week begins a new adventure – one that will conclude my moving process for the most part and begin my working schedule. I am excited for this as the longer I am here the more my desire grows to help the Central American church restore families & rescue orphans.
